Installation

This page guides you through installing Simple Agent Designer in your Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central environment.

Installing from AppSource

The recommended way to install Simple Agent Designer is through Microsoft AppSource.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Open your Business Central environment
  2. Navigate to Extension Management (search for "Extension Management" in the Tell Me search bar)
  3. Choose Marketplace from the action bar
  4. Search for Simple Agent Designer by Hougaard
  5. Select the extension and choose Free Trial or Get It Now
  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete installation
  7. Wait for the installation to complete — this may take a few minutes

Verifying Installation

After installation, verify that the extension is active:

  1. Go to Extension Management
  2. Search for "Simple Agent Designer"
  3. Confirm the status shows as Installed
  4. Also verify that AL Compiler and Interpreter by Hougaard is installed (this is a required dependency and should be installed automatically)

Installing in an On-Premises Environment

For on-premises Business Central deployments, you can install the extension using the Business Central Administration Shell.

Prerequisites

  • Access to the Business Central server
  • Administrator privileges
  • The .app file for both Simple Agent Designer and AL Compiler and Interpreter

Installation Steps

  1. Open the Business Central Administration Shell as an administrator
  2. Publish the AL Compiler and Interpreter extension first (if not already installed):
   Publish-NAVApp -ServerInstance BC -Path "ALCompilerAndInterpreter.app"
Sync-NAVApp -ServerInstance BC -Name "AL Compiler and Interpreter"
Install-NAVApp -ServerInstance BC -Name "AL Compiler and Interpreter"
  1. Publish and install Simple Agent Designer:
   Publish-NAVApp -ServerInstance BC -Path "SimpleAgentDesigner.app"
Sync-NAVApp -ServerInstance BC -Name "Simple Agent Designer"
Install-NAVApp -ServerInstance BC -Name "Simple Agent Designer"

Replace BC with your actual server instance name and update the .app file paths accordingly.

First Launch

After installation, the first time you open the Simple Agent Designer Setup page, the extension automatically:

  1. Creates the default setup record
  2. Creates 11 provider entries — every supported provider except Azure Open AI (you add Azure manually since it needs your own deployment endpoint). You then enter an API key only for the provider(s) you use.
  3. Loads standard agents and workload types from the built-in resource file

You will see a notification if API keys have not yet been configured. This is expected — continue to the Initial Configuration page for setup instructions.

Upgrading

When a new version of Simple Agent Designer is available:

AppSource (SaaS)

  • Updates are applied automatically by Microsoft during scheduled update windows
  • You can also manually check for updates in Extension Management

On-Premises

  1. Publish the new .app file
  2. Sync the extension to apply schema changes
  3. Run the data upgrade if prompted:
   Publish-NAVApp -ServerInstance BC -Path "SimpleAgentDesigner_NewVersion.app"
Sync-NAVApp -ServerInstance BC -Name "Simple Agent Designer"
Start-NAVAppDataUpgrade -ServerInstance BC -Name "Simple Agent Designer"

Uninstalling

To remove Simple Agent Designer:

  1. Go to Extension Management
  2. Find Simple Agent Designer
  3. Choose Uninstall
  4. Confirm the uninstallation

Note that uninstalling the extension will remove all extension-specific data including agents, workloads, workload types, and processing history. Export your configuration before uninstalling if you want to preserve it.
