Glossary

This glossary defines key terms and concepts used in Cloud Replicator documentation.

A

Access Key

A secret credential used to authenticate with Azure services. Access keys provide full access to the associated resource and should be protected.

Active (Table Mapping)

A setting that determines whether a table mapping is included in automatic replication runs. Only active mappings are processed during scheduled replications.

A cloud-based search service from Microsoft that provides full-text search, faceted navigation, and AI-powered search capabilities. Also known as Azure Cognitive Search.

Azure Cosmos DB

Microsoft's globally distributed, multi-model database service. Cloud Replicator supports both the NoSQL (Core) API and Table API.

Azure Table Storage

A NoSQL key-value store in Azure that offers highly scalable, cost-effective storage for structured data using a PartitionKey and RowKey model.

B

Background Session

A Business Central session that runs separately from the user's interactive session. Cloud Replicator uses background sessions for parallel replication processing.

Blob

A Binary Large Object field type in Business Central that can store binary data such as images, documents, or formatted text.

Business Central

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, the cloud-based ERP platform that Cloud Replicator extends.

C

Change Log

A Business Central feature that tracks changes to data, including insertions, modifications, and deletions. Required for the Replicate Deletions feature.

Codeunit

A Business Central object type that contains AL code. Cloud Replicator's main engine is codeunit 70319891.

Company Filter

A setting on table mappings that restricts replication to specific Business Central companies.

Container

In Azure Cosmos DB (NoSQL), a container holds JSON documents. Cloud Replicator creates one container per Business Central table.

Core API

See NoSQL API.

D

Debug Mode

A Cloud Replicator setting that runs replication in the foreground session for troubleshooting. Blocks the user's session during execution.

Default (Field Action)

The field action that includes a field as-is without transformation. This is the implicit behavior for fields without explicit field actions.

Destination

The target cloud service where data is replicated. Supported destinations include Azure Table Storage, Cosmos DB (NoSQL), Cosmos DB (Table), and Azure AI Search.

Dimension Set ID

A Business Central identifier that links a record to a set of dimension values. Can be expanded using the "Unfold DimensionSet" field action.

E

Engine

A replication worker that processes tables in the background. Multiple engines can run in parallel for faster replication.

Engine Count

The maximum number of parallel replication engines. Configured in Cloud Replicator Setup.

Engine Pulse

A real-time tracking system that monitors active replication engines, showing their progress and status.

Exclude (Field Action)

A field action that omits a field from replication entirely.

F

Field Action

A configuration that specifies how a specific field should be handled during replication. Options include Default, Exclude, Unfold, and others.

Field Mapping

See Field Action.

Full Replication

A replication that processes all records in a table, not just changes. Occurs on first run or after resetting last replication.

G

Global Filter

A filter expression on a field action that restricts which records are affected by the action.

GUID

Globally Unique Identifier. A 128-bit identifier used by Business Central's SystemId field.

I

Incremental Replication

A replication that processes only records modified since the last successful run. More efficient than full replication.

Index

In Cloud Replicator, a sequence number that allows multiple table mappings for the same table and destination combination.

In Azure AI Search, an index is a searchable data structure containing documents.

J

Job Queue

Business Central's scheduling system for running background tasks. Used to automate Cloud Replicator replication.

JSON

JavaScript Object Notation. The data format used for storing and transmitting data to cloud destinations.

L

License

Authorization to use Cloud Replicator in production environments. Sandbox environments work without a license.

N

NoSQL API

Azure Cosmos DB's Core (SQL) API, which stores data as JSON documents. One of the supported Cloud Replicator destinations.

O

OData

Open Data Protocol. A standard for building and consuming RESTful APIs. Azure services use OData types for data formatting.

Option Caption

The human-readable text for an option field value. Can be included instead of the numeric value using the "Use Option Caption" field action.

P

Partition Key

In Azure Table Storage and Cosmos DB Table API, the first part of a record's key that groups related records together.

Per Day

A table mapping option that creates series tables with daily snapshots for time-series analysis.

Permission Set

A Business Central security object that defines what tables and objects a user can access.

Primary Key

The field(s) that uniquely identify a record in a Business Central table.

R

Replication

The process of copying data from Business Central to a cloud destination.

Replication Log

A historical record of all replication operations, including timing, record counts, and status.

Replication Parameters

Internal records that queue replication work for background processing.

Request Unit (RU)

The unit of measure for throughput in Azure Cosmos DB. Operations consume RUs based on their complexity.

Rollback Time

A setting that adds an overlap period to replication filters, ensuring no records are missed between runs.

RowKey

In Azure Table Storage and Cosmos DB Table API, the second part of a record's key that uniquely identifies records within a partition.

S

Sandbox

A Business Central environment type used for testing and development. Cloud Replicator works without a license in sandbox environments.

Sanitization

The automatic process of making names (tables, fields) compatible with cloud destination requirements by replacing special characters.

Series Table

An additional table created when Per Day is enabled, containing daily snapshots of data.

Session

A user's connection to Business Central. Background sessions are separate from interactive user sessions.

SystemId

A GUID automatically assigned by Business Central to every record. Stable across primary key changes.

SystemId as RowKey

A table mapping option that uses SystemId instead of primary key fields as the unique identifier in the destination.

T

Table API

Azure Cosmos DB's Table API, which is compatible with Azure Table Storage but offers premium features.

Table Mapping

A configuration that specifies a Business Central table to replicate, its destination, and replication options.

Table Splitting

A feature that divides large tables across multiple replication engines for parallel processing.

Throttling

When a cloud service limits request rates to prevent overload. Results in HTTP 429 errors.

Timeout

The maximum duration an operation can run before being terminated. Configurable for replication engines.

U

Unfold

A field action that expands related table data inline with the current record, creating a denormalized structure.

Upsert

An operation that inserts a record if it doesn't exist or updates it if it does. Cloud Replicator uses upsert operations.
