Overview
Erik's ToolBox is a powerful extension for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central that provides instant AL code scripting and a comprehensive set of utilities designed for administrators, consultants, and support professionals. With Erik's ToolBox, you can write and execute AL code directly within Business Central -- no Visual Studio Code installation or traditional development environment required.
Whether you need to quickly inspect data, automate a repetitive task, run a one-off data correction, or explore Business Central objects, Erik's ToolBox gives you the tools to do it immediately and interactively from your browser.
What Is Erik's ToolBox?
Erik's ToolBox is a Business Central app published by hougaard.com (current version 3.0.0.0) that embeds a full AL scripting environment inside Business Central itself. Instead of going through the traditional cycle of writing AL code in Visual Studio Code, compiling an extension, and publishing it to your environment, you can simply open the ToolBox editor, write your code, and run it instantly.
The app is built for professionals who work with Business Central on a daily basis and need a fast, flexible way to interact with the system beyond what the standard user interface offers.
Who Is It For?
Erik's ToolBox serves a wide range of Business Central professionals:
- Administrators -- You can use ToolBox to perform bulk data modifications, inspect and edit table data, run SQL queries, and manage system configurations without waiting for developer resources.
- Consultants -- You can quickly prototype solutions, validate data, transfer data between environments, and demonstrate functionality to clients in real time.
- Support Professionals -- You can diagnose issues by inspecting objects and data, execute targeted fixes, and automate common support tasks with saved programs.
- Developers -- You can use the interactive REPL (Read-Evaluate-Print Loop) to test code snippets, explore the BC object model, and prototype logic before committing it to a full extension.
Three-Component Architecture
Erik's ToolBox consists of three separate but tightly integrated Business Central apps:
| Component | Description | App ID |
|---|---|---|
| AL Compiler and Interpreter | The core engine that parses, compiles, and executes AL code at runtime inside Business Central. This component provides the language runtime, built-in functions, and execution environment. | de0ad312-13dc-48bc-9aa4-eec46e388ee0 |
| AL AI Services | The agent infrastructure: the AI Providers page, the chat panel, the conversation store, and the connection to the AI providers. Shared with other Hougaard apps that host agents. | 9095ed8c-5bff-4b5f-84db-c487250959b3 |
| ToolBox | The user-facing application that provides the interactive code editor, SQL workbench, object inspector, batch processing wizard, the ToolBox Agent and SQL Agent, remote packages, GitHub integration, and all other end-user features. | fe7b0b6a-e183-4606-882d-6adff0ce9401 |
The AL Compiler and Interpreter and AL AI Services are dependencies of the ToolBox app. All three components must be installed for the ToolBox to function. The compiler and interpreter engine handles all code execution, AL AI Services connects the agents to the AI providers, and the ToolBox app provides the user interface and feature set that you interact with daily.
Key Value Proposition
Traditional AL development in Business Central follows a well-defined but time-consuming workflow:
- Open Visual Studio Code.
- Write AL code in a project.
- Compile the extension.
- Publish and install it in your environment.
- Run the code and review results.
- Repeat for every change.
Erik's ToolBox eliminates this overhead for a wide range of tasks. With the ToolBox, you:
- Write code directly in Business Central -- The built-in editor runs in your browser with syntax highlighting and IntelliSense support.
- Get instant results -- Your code executes immediately. There is no compile-publish-install cycle.
- Work interactively -- The REPL-style environment lets you iterate on your code in real time, inspecting results after each execution.
- Need no external tools -- Everything runs inside Business Central. You do not need Visual Studio Code, Docker, or any local development setup.
This makes the ToolBox ideal for ad-hoc tasks, data inspection, quick fixes, prototyping, and any situation where setting up a full development project would be disproportionate to the task at hand.
How It Differs from Standard AL Development
| Aspect | Standard AL Development | Erik's ToolBox |
|---|---|---|
| Environment | Visual Studio Code with AL Language extension | Business Central browser client |
| Workflow | Write, compile, publish, install, run | Write and run immediately |
| Output | Compiled .app extension file | Instant on-screen results |
| Iteration | Minutes per cycle | Seconds per cycle |
| Persistence | Permanent extension installed on environment | Scripts saved as programs or run on-the-fly |
| Use case | Production extensions and customizations | Ad-hoc tasks, data ops, diagnostics, prototyping |
| IntelliSense | Full VS Code IntelliSense | Symbol-based IntelliSense for BC objects |
The ToolBox is not a replacement for Visual Studio Code and traditional AL development. It is a complementary tool that fills the gap between "I need to do something quickly in Business Central" and "I need to build and deploy a full extension."
Major Feature Areas
Erik's ToolBox provides a broad set of capabilities organized into several feature areas:
- Interactive Code Editor -- A browser-based AL code editor with syntax highlighting, IntelliSense, and instant execution. You can write anything from a single-line expression to complex multi-procedure scripts.
- SQL Workbench -- Execute SQL queries (SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE) directly against your Business Central data without leaving the application.
- Excel Integration -- Read data from and write data to Excel files directly from your AL scripts using built-in Excel functions.
- Batch Processing -- A step-by-step wizard that guides you through search-and-replace operations for bulk data modifications across tables.
- AI Agents -- A coding agent on the Interactive Code page and a SQL Agent on the SQL Workbench that write, check, run, and explain programs and queries through tools, connected to one of twelve AI providers (Azure OpenAI, OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, LM Studio, and more).
- Object Inspector -- Browse all Business Central objects including tables, pages, reports, and codeunits. The Data Inspector lets you view and edit table data directly.
- Remote Packages -- Transfer data between Business Central environments and tenants, enabling data migration and synchronization scenarios.
- Data in GitHub -- Version control for Business Central table data with commit, pull, and monitoring capabilities through GitHub integration.
- Run Programs -- Save your scripts as named programs, assign them to specific users, and schedule them for automated execution via the Business Central job queue.
- Symbol Management -- Download and manage symbols from your Business Central environment to power IntelliSense with awareness of your specific tables, pages, reports, and codeunits.
Each of these feature areas is covered in detail in its own documentation section. You can explore them in the order that matches your needs, or start with the getting started guide to install and configure the ToolBox for the first time.
