What is the SharePoint Connector

The SharePoint Connector is an app for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central that seamlessly integrates your ERP system with Microsoft SharePoint. It enables you to store, access, and manage documents directly from within Business Central, bringing together the document management capabilities of SharePoint with your business data.

Purpose and Benefits

The connector bridges the gap between your business processes in Business Central and document storage in SharePoint. Instead of switching between applications or manually organizing files, you can work with SharePoint documents directly from the records you use every day.

Key Benefits

Benefit Description
Centralized Access View and manage SharePoint files without leaving Business Central
Automatic Organization Documents are automatically stored in the correct folders based on your business records
Reduced Manual Work Eliminate copy-paste operations and manual file organization
Better Compliance Consistent folder structures and metadata improve document governance
Enhanced Collaboration Leverage SharePoint's sharing and collaboration features

How It Works

The SharePoint Connector uses the SharePoint REST API to communicate with SharePoint Online. When you open a customer card, sales order, or any other mapped record, the connector automatically shows you the related SharePoint folder and its contents in a FactBox panel.

Core Functionality

  1. Table Mapping: You define which Business Central tables should have corresponding SharePoint folders
  2. Folder Creation: The connector creates folders in SharePoint that mirror your Business Central data structure
  3. Document Access: Browse, upload, and download files directly from Business Central
  4. Metadata Sync: Business Central field values can be stored as SharePoint metadata columns

Architecture Overview

Business Central <---> SharePoint Connector <---> SharePoint REST API <---> SharePoint Online

The connector operates within Business Central and uses OAuth 2.0 against Microsoft Entra ID to call the SharePoint REST API directly. The Device Code flow requests the delegated SharePoint scope AllSites.Manage plus offline_access; the App Registration flow uses the OAuth v1 resource= parameter and requests only the offline_access scope; the Modern App Registration flow uses the standard Business Central OAuth module and requests AllSites.Manage; the PKCE flow (the default) signs in as a public client without a client secret and requests AllSites.Manage plus offline_access. It does not use Microsoft Graph.

Who Should Use This App

The SharePoint Connector is designed for organizations that:

  • Want to maintain organized document storage linked to business records
  • Need to automate document archival processes
  • Require e-signature capabilities integrated with their ERP
