Dual-App Configuration

This page explains how to configure Dual-App mode in Simple Object Designer.

Configuration Settings

App Mode

Setting Location
Field App Mode
Values Single, Dual
Page Setup

Extension Names

Setting Purpose
Extension Name Name for App 1 (tables)
Extension Name 2 Name for App 2 (pages)

Naming Recommendations

Make it clear the apps are related:

  • App 1: "Contoso Customizations - Tables"
  • App 2: "Contoso Customizations - Pages"

Or:

  • App 1: "Contoso Customizations Part 1"
  • App 2: "Contoso Customizations Part 2"

Object Distribution

Automatic Distribution

SOD automatically distributes objects:

App 1 gets:

  • Table extensions
  • New tables (features)
  • Table-level objects

App 2 gets:

  • Page extensions
  • Page placements
  • Report extensions
  • API pages
  • Page-level logic

What You Control

You don't manually assign objects to apps. SOD determines placement based on object type.

Version Management

Separate Versions

Each app has its own version:

  • Both increment when you publish
  • Track versions independently
  • Consider alignment strategy

Version Coordination

Keep versions aligned for clarity:

  • Same major.minor for related changes
  • Increment together when possible

Configuration Checklist

Before enabling Dual-App:

  • App Mode set to Dual
  • Extension Name configured (App 1)
  • Extension Name 2 configured (App 2)
  • Publisher consistent across both
  • Start Object Number appropriate

Switching to Dual-App

From Single to Dual

If currently using Single mode:

  1. Backup current configuration
  2. Note current customizations
  3. Change App Mode to Dual
  4. Configure Extension Name 2
  5. Publish

Considerations

  • Existing single app may need uninstall
  • Data migration considerations
  • Test in sandbox first

Switching Back to Single

From Dual to Single

If Dual mode isn't needed:

  1. Uninstall App 2
  2. Uninstall App 1
  3. Change App Mode to Single
  4. Republish as single app

When to Switch Back

  • Circular dependency resolved
  • Simplified maintenance desired
  • Single app sufficient

Troubleshooting Configuration

Compilation Errors

If errors persist after enabling Dual-App:

  • Check both extension names set
  • Review circular dependency location

Missing Objects

If objects don't appear in expected app:

  • SOD determines placement automatically
  • Review object type
  • Check publication status
