Workload Types
Workload Types are reusable templates that define how a category of workloads should be processed. This page explains how to create and configure workload types.
What is a Workload Type?
A Workload Type is a blueprint for workloads. It specifies:
- Which agent handles workloads of this type
- What processing mode to use (payload-based or data-based)
- Whether to split data before processing
- What documents to create (journals, sales orders, purchase orders)
- Additional instructions that supplement the agent's own instructions
When you create a workload, you select a type, and all the type's settings apply automatically.
Accessing Workload Types
- From the Agent Role Center, choose Types under the Work section, or
- Search for Workload Types in the Tell Me search bar
The Workload Type List shows all configured types.
Creating a New Workload Type
- Open the Workload Type List
- Choose New or click on an empty line
- Select the new type to open the Workload Type Card
The Workload Type Card
General Section
| Field | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Type | Unique identifier code (required, up to 20 characters) | INVOICE-PROC |
| Description | Human-readable name | Invoice Processing |
| Operation | Processing mode. On screen this field is also captioned Type, with options Payload based (PayloadBased) and Data based (DataBased) | Payload based |
Operation Modes
PayloadBased
The workload description and any attached file are sent directly to the agent. The agent processes the content as-is.
Use when:
- Tasks are defined by written descriptions
- Files (Excel, PDF, images) need to be analyzed
- Each workload is a self-contained task
DataBased
The system queries a Business Central table and creates child workloads — one per matching record. Each child includes the original description plus the record data as JSON.
Use when:
- You want to process BC records in bulk
- Each record should be analyzed individually
- You want incremental processing (only new/changed records)
Data Setup Section (DataBased only)
This section is visible only when Operation is set to DataBased.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Table No. | The Business Central table to query (select from table picker) |
| Table Name | Display name of the selected table (read-only) |
| Filter String | BC filter expression to apply (use Assist Edit to build filters) |
| Add Since Last Filter | When enabled, automatically filters by SystemModifiedAt >= Last Run |
Setting Up Filters
- Click the Assist Edit button (ellipsis) next to Filter String
- The filter builder opens with the selected table's fields
- Define your filter criteria
- Close the builder — the filter expression is saved
Incremental Processing
Enable Add Since Last Filter to process only records that have changed since the last time this type was processed:
- The system adds a filter:
SystemModifiedAt >= [LastRun] - After processing, the Last Run timestamp updates automatically
- On the first run, all matching records are processed
- On subsequent runs, only new or modified records are included
Posting Section
Configure document creation settings for agents that create Business Central documents:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| General Journal Template | Template for GL journal entries |
| General Journal Batch | Batch within the template |
| No. Series G/L documents | Number series for GL document numbering |
| Default Item Journal Template | Template used when creating item journal entries |
| Default Item Journal Batch | Batch within the item journal template |
| Default No. Series Item Journals | Number series for item journal document numbering |
| Table Views | Count of configured table view filters (click to manage) |
| Purchase Document Type | Type of purchase document to create (Quote, Order, Invoice, Credit Memo, Return Order, Blanket Order) |
| Sales Document Type | Type of sales document to create (Quote, Order, Invoice, Credit Memo, Return Order, Blanket Order) |
These settings override the global defaults from Setup when specified.
Workload Setup Section
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Use Excel Splitter | How to handle Excel file uploads: No, Yes With Header, Yes No Header |
| Initial Worker | The agent that processes workloads of this type (select from Worker list) |
| Create Statement for Bank Account | Bank account for statement creation (future feature, currently disabled) |
Excel Splitter Options
| Option | Behavior |
|---|---|
| No | Excel files are sent to the agent as-is |
| Yes With Header | Row 1 is treated as headers; each subsequent row becomes a child workload with header-named JSON fields |
| Yes No Header | All rows become child workloads with auto-generated column names (Column A, Column B, etc.) |
Mobile App (Coming Soon) Section
Configure mobile app availability. The Simple Agent Designer Mobile App is not yet released, so these settings prepare a type for future mobile use.
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Available in Mobile App | Expose this type in the mobile app |
| Mobile Upload File | Allow file upload from mobile |
| Mobile Take Photo | Allow photo capture from mobile |
| Get Text Instructions | Show text instructions on mobile |
Editing Type Instructions
- Open the Workload Type Card
- Choose Edit Instructions from the action bar
- The Workload Type Editor opens
- Write instructions that apply to all workloads of this type
- Close the editor to save
Type instructions supplement the agent's own instructions. They provide type-specific context without changing the agent's base behavior.

Processing from the Type Card
For DataBased workload types, you can trigger processing directly from the type card:
- Open the Workload Type Card
- Choose Process from the action bar (enabled for DataBased types only)
- The system creates a workload from the type configuration and immediately processes it
- Table Splitter creates child workloads from matching records
This is a quick way to run data-based processing without manually creating a workload first.
Tips and Best Practices
- Create a workload type for each category of recurring task
- Use descriptive Type codes that your team will recognize
- Keep type instructions focused on the "what" (task specifics), while agent instructions focus on the "how" (behavior and format)
- Use DataBased with incremental filtering for regular batch processing
- Test new types with small data sets before running against full tables
- Document your types so other team members understand their purpose
- Review and update type instructions when business processes change
