Worker Types
Simple Agent Designer provides seven specialized worker types, each designed for a specific category of business task. This page explains what each type does and when to use it.
Worker Type Reference

| ALAI | AL Runner AI | Compiles and executes AL code snippets |
| DataModifier | Data Modifier AI | Updates existing records in Business Central tables |
AI (General Purpose)
The AI worker type is the most versatile and commonly used agent type. It serves as the primary "thinker" in most workflows.
What It Does
- Analyzes workload descriptions and attached files
- Makes decisions based on instructions and context
- Routes tasks to other specialized agents
- Provides summaries, categorizations, and recommendations
Initialization Context
When an AI worker initializes, it receives:
- Company information (name, country, local currency)
- Current date and general ledger setup
- Agent identity and custom instructions
- Workload type instructions
- The workload description as the initial user message
- Data context from table splitter (if applicable)
Tool Support
When tools are enabled, the AI worker can call any available tool during processing. The worker automatically loops through tool calls — executing each tool and sending results back to the AI — until the AI has no more tools to call.
Best For
- First agent in a multi-agent workflow (the "coordinator")
- Standalone analysis and summarization tasks
- Tasks that require reasoning before action
- Interactive chat on the Role Center
DataAI (Data Query)
The DataAI worker type is optimized for finding and returning data from Business Central.
What It Does
- Receives requests in JSON format with "Table" or "Value" fields
- Queries Business Central tables using the FindData() function
- Returns results as structured JSON
- Routes results back to the requesting agent
How It Works
- Another agent sends a query request (via agent cooperation)
- The DataAI agent parses the JSON input
- It calls FindData() to query the specified table
- Results are formatted as JSON and queued back to the original requestor
Best For
- Looking up customer, vendor, or item information
- Retrieving account balances or transaction history
- Answering questions about Business Central data
- Acting as a "data assistant" to other agents
EntryAI (Journal Entry)
The EntryAI worker type creates general ledger journal entries.
What It Does
- Parses AI responses for journal entry field data
- Creates general journal lines in the configured template and batch
- Links created entries to the workload for tracking
- Uses the number series configured in the workload type or setup
Configuration Requirements
Before using EntryAI agents, ensure:
- A General Journal Template is configured (in Setup or Workload Type)
- A General Journal Batch is configured
- A No. Series for G/L Documents is configured
- The user has posting permissions for the journal
Best For
- Automated journal entry creation from analyzed data
- Bank statement processing and reconciliation
- Expense categorization and posting
- Period-end adjusting entries
SalesEntryAI (Sales Documents)
The SalesEntryAI worker type creates sales documents in Business Central.
What It Does
- Parses AI responses for sales document data
- Creates sales headers (quotes, orders, invoices, credit memos, return orders, blanket orders)
- Adds sales lines with items, quantities, and amounts
- Links created documents to the workload
Supported Document Types
| Document Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Quote | Sales quote for a customer |
| Order | Sales order |
| Invoice | Sales invoice |
| Credit Memo | Sales credit memo |
| Return Order | Sales return order |
| Blanket Order | Blanket sales order |
The document type is configured on the Workload Type card.
Best For
- Automated sales order creation from customer requests
- Converting quotes to orders based on approval rules
- Creating invoices from analyzed source documents
- Bulk sales document generation from Excel data
PurchaseEntryAI (Purchase Documents)
The PurchaseEntryAI worker type creates purchase documents in Business Central.
What It Does
- Parses AI responses for purchase document data
- Creates purchase headers (quotes, orders, invoices, credit memos, return orders, blanket orders)
- Adds purchase lines with items, quantities, and amounts
- Links created documents to the workload
Supported Document Types
| Document Type | Description |
|---|---|
| Quote | Purchase quote from a vendor |
| Order | Purchase order |
| Invoice | Purchase invoice |
| Credit Memo | Purchase credit memo |
| Return Order | Purchase return order |
| Blanket Order | Blanket purchase order |
The document type is configured on the Workload Type card.
Best For
- Automated purchase order creation from requisitions
- Processing incoming vendor invoices
- Creating credit memos based on return analysis
- Bulk purchasing from analyzed supplier data
ALAI (AL Runner)
The ALAI worker type compiles and executes AL code snippets generated by other agents.
What It Does
- Extracts AL code from code blocks (delimited by triple backticks) in agent responses
- Compiles the AL code using the AL Compiler and Interpreter extension
- Executes the compiled code
- Reports results (success or errors) back to the requesting agent
Requirements
- The AL Compiler and Interpreter extension must be installed (it is a dependency of Simple Agent Designer)
- The agent generating the code must produce valid AL syntax
Security Note
AL Runner agents execute code within your Business Central environment. Ensure that:
- Only trusted agents generate code for the AL Runner
- Instructions clearly constrain what kind of code should be generated
- You review process activity logs for unexpected operations
Best For
- Dynamic data processing that goes beyond standard tools
- Complex calculations or transformations
- Custom operations not covered by built-in tools
- Prototyping automation scripts
DataModifier (Record Updates)
The DataModifier worker type updates existing records in Business Central tables.
What It Does
- Parses update instructions from AI responses
- Uses tool calling to modify specific fields on existing records
- Validates changes before applying them
- Tracks modifications in the process activity log
How It Works
- The AI analyzes which records need updating and what changes to make
- Tool calls are generated to update specific fields
- Each update is executed through the tool system
- Results are logged for audit purposes
Best For
- Bulk data corrections based on AI analysis
- Updating customer or vendor records from analyzed documents
- Enriching item data based on external information
- Applying categorizations or tags to existing records
